The constituted research groups in IO are divided according to the great Asian sub-regions – Oriental Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia. There was also recognition of key-countries – now called emerging powers (China and India); the countries that due to their fast economic growth (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea) are also becoming medium powers; and the large economic development countries (Japan). IO’s research guidelines attend also to new classifications which are beginning in European literature, mainly French, which is South-South, Afro-Asian and Euro-Asian thematics, and, sporadically, they can even include the identification and monitoring of the new coordination forms among these countries/regions.
