A 4 months fully funded post-doc position is available within the Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa (ICS-UL), beginning in September 2012, under the supervision of Prof. Marzia Grassi.
The ICS-UL is looking for a researcher with a PhD degree in the area of social sciences to work on a project on the functioning of transnational child-raising arrangements for Angolan parents living in Portugal.
This grant is part of the NORFACE funded European comparative project, TCRAf-Eu: Effects of transnational child-raising arrangements (TCRAs) on the life-chances of children, migrant parents and caregivers between Africa and Europe.
TheICS-UL is an interdisciplinary institution dedicated to research and advanced teaching in the Social Sciences. The mission of the ICS is to study contemporary societies with a special emphasis on Portugal and the societies and cultures with which Portugal has an historical relationship, either in Europe or in other regions of the world. Bringing together researchers from several different disciplines, the ICS currently focuses its research on five main subject areas: the formation of the contemporary world; the study of citizenship and democratic institutions; the problems of sustainability, linking the environment, risk and space; social changes and individual action in the context of the family, lifestyles and schooling; and issues concerning identity, migration and religion. The main disciplines represented at the Institute are: Social and Cultural Anthropology, Political Science, Economics, Human Geography, History, Social Psychology and Sociology. The ICS is a research unit accredited by the FCT and classified as excellent. The institution received Associate Laboratory status in 2002.
Tasks/framework for this postdoctoral position:
The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for finalizing the report on a survey of 2250 school children in Angola, and of a smaller survey of 300 migrant parents in Portugal with children living either in Portugal or Angola. The reports have to be written in English.
The postdoctoral researcher, under the supervision of Prof. Marzia Grassi, will take charge of the final quantitative analysis of the surveys.
Qualifications:
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher candidate with:
A PhD degree in a social science discipline (anthropology, sociology, economics, social psychology, demography, geography, etc.);
o Fluency in spoken Portuguese and English and excellent writing skills;
o Background in quantitative methods and familiarity with qualitative methods;
Specific skills and training in SPSS and Excel, and experience with adaptation and analysis of data of surveys in developing country contexts;
o Strong analytical capacity;
o Very good adaptation of statistical analysis;
Proven interest in development studies and migration and/or European migration law;
Familiarity with current debates in transnational migration studies, child fosterage norms, development studies and/or childhood studies;
o Willingness and proven ability to work in a team is important;
o Experience working independently and to a schedule.
